Top Work!
by Toby Athersuch
A lovely ‘Topping Out’ event today at the site of the new HQ facility on Staines Lane to mark a milestone in the building – the roof is on!

Members of the Group were joined by representatives of key charity donors, community supporters, councillors, the Mayor of Runnymede Dolcie Clarke, and the High Sheriff of Surrey Jim Glover.

It was a great chance to look around the building – seeing it up close makes the whole thing very real, and we are so close to our fundraising goal to finish it by April next year!

It is going up quickly…

The High Sheriff, also presented the Group with a High Sheriff Youth Award of £2000 to purchase new equipment to help us with our Scouting and fundraising activities.

Thanks to all those who attended to mark this occasion.

You have seen the floor parts now see how they are assembled.
1) Floor area dictates the number of concrete beams on the steels and their spacing using concrete blocks as infill.
2) Steels are bolted to the brickwork pads for a level off the ground floor – in case it floods!
3) Concete blocks put between the concrete beams
4) Like a children’s game ‘Thermalite’ blocks moved to fill in the gaps.

The new HQ floor will be finished TODAY – now to build UP, first with wooden frame.

HQ Build to Commence
An open letter by David Moore.

Dear Parents, leaders, Committee & Friends.

On the 8th February 2008 I wrote a letter to the borough treasurer asking if there was a possibility of relocating 1st Chertsey Scout Group. After a number of sites were identified we were offered a lease on the Staines Lane recreation ground as the site for a new HQ build.

I can finally tell you all that on Monday 18th June 2018 Longman Developments will start work on site to build Chertsey Scouts a new home & secure our future. That’s 3783 days, 10 years, 4 months, & 4 days since posting the letter to the council.

It’s not been an easy journey, we had many setbacks along the way. I would especially like to thank all those who have been involved in the project so far, Thorpe Park for the initial help with planning and Dr Brian Perry for his tireless work over the past few years in helping us through the complex planning process.

Although the build starts Monday the fundraising behind the scenes needs to carry on and ramp up. There is still a significant shortfall to complete the build of around 65k. We need all the help we can muster in raising the required funds to complete the fit out of the new HQ. If anybody is able to help with this then please make contact with the group.

There will be a ground breaking ceremony at the site with the Mayor of Runnymede hopefully early next week I will keep you all informed.

We will be keeping you up to date with the progress of the build on our Website & Chertsey Scouts Facebook.

Kind Regards

David Moore
